YA Safety & Sea Survival Course

This course is critical for skippers and crew wanting to sail offshore and acquire or update their survival skills. And is required by 50% of racing crew for offshore racing.

As stated in the Racing Rules of Sailing for 2001-2004: "50% of the crew, including the skipper, shall have undertaken training and received a Certificate of Competence... in AYF Safety and Sea Survival... which shall be valid for five (5) years".

"From the evidence of the survivors of the yacht 'WINSTON CHURCHILL' and the tests conducted by the NSW Water Police... it is indisputable that trained crew have a greater likelihood of survival than untrained crew" Coroner Abernathy-Inquest Into the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

  •   Heavy weather seamanship - crew routines, boat handling, drogues
  •   Fire fighting techniques

What do I bring?

Racing Rules of Sailing (Blue Book)
Change of clothes
PFD 1 life jacket with crutch strap
Safety harness with crutch strap and tether
Note pad and biro
Offshore wet weather gear including sea boots (what you wear while sailing offshore)

How long is the course?

Two full days, 9:30am to 4:30pm. Exam on last day of the course.
