Coastal Skipper Practical

The Coastal Skipper Practical (motor) course is for the more experienced. It covers pilotage, boat handling and adverse weather and is aimed at perfecting skills and techniques for coastal and offshore passages by day or night. The course consists of skippered passages by each of the students in a whole variety of situations.

Over the course you will log at least 100 miles and 4 night hours. There will be an opportunity to show ability as skipper - to take charge, make decisions, plan and implement passages, organise navigation, deckwork and domestic duties. 

The minimum pre-course experience is 15 days on board (two as skipper), 300 sea miles and 8 night hours. It is assumed that your ability will be to Coastal Skipper Theory for navigation and Day Skipper Practical (motor) for boat handling.

Designed for tidal waters. On completion you should be able to skipper a motor cruiser on coastal passages by day or night. This course is suitable those who wish to go on to take the RYA/MCA Coastal Skipper examination.

Syllabus

  •   Passage planning - relevant planning to enable a safe passage, fuel consumption in
           different conditions, customs procedures & requirements.
  •   Preparation for sea - safety equipment requirements, skippers duties and responsibilities.
  •   Pilotage -preparation of pilotage plan, pilotage by day & night.
  •   Passage making & ability as skipper - managing the boat and crew, weather and
           navigation.
  •   Radar - understanding and effective use.
  •   Boat handling - handling effectively in all conditions, different berthing situations &
           techniques.
  •   Adverse weather - preparation, handling and navigation.
  •   Engines - Checks & maintenance, engine systems & trouble shooting.
  •   Emergency situations - recovery of MOB, distress flares & emergency equipment,
           rescue procedures.
  •   Emergency situations - MOB and emergency service rescue procedures.
