Private tuition on your boat

Yachtmaster Motor School offers motor cruising or power boating instruction on your own boat. There are many benefits with using your own boat for instruction, not the least of which, is the flexibility in terms of dates, location and training format and it also enables you to learn at your own pace.

Our instructors have significant experience of a wide range of yachts, motor cruisers and power boats, and they will soon build your confidence and maximise your enjoyment on the water. Available all year round, demand is high among motor cruiser owners for the skills to be able to use their boat safely and to its full potential. We have various options available:

All training is conducted by an experienced RYA instructor onboard your own boat, so please call or email Yachtmaster Motor School to discuss dates that are suitable for you.

RYA certificate course

Our instructors will come aboard your boat and teach the appropriate level of RYA practical certificate course for your level of knowledge (check the minimum requirements for each level to ensure you have appropriate knowledge). RYA Motor Cruising courses run between two and five days live aboard.

Marina boat handling

With training and some practice, you can impress with your boat handling skills. Learn to resolve that difficult berthing situation and handle your boat with confidence and style.

New skipper/owner training

Specially designed for the needs of a new skipper/owner of a motor cruiser. Our qualified instructors will guide you through the early stages of ownership enabling you to expand your abilities in a safe environment and to use your boat to its full potential.

We teach owners and skippers to understand what is important and what is not. But without proper training a motor cruiser or power boat in the wrong hands can be extremely dangerous, much of the training is about safety as well as driving the boat effectively in a marina and at speed out at sea.

Crew/Race Training

Crew training courses are designed to help you get the best out of your crew. Knowledge empowers people and will promote harmony aboard your motor cruiser when coming along side in a marina, when anchoring or when picking up a mooring buoy. Your crew will learn how to: tie bends and hitches; lasso a cleat or mooring buoy; deploy and set an anchor; use a dinghy; tide tables and pilot books.

Full or half day boat handling

Our full or half day boat handling courses are perfect for owners who require coaching in specific areas or who want to brush up on competencies and knowledge that is rusty or who wish to fine tune their abilities.

Some areas of instruction worth considering may include: boat handling, marina boat handling, passage making, pilotage, anchoring, or picking up a mooring buoy. We can teach or refresh your memory on the most effective ways to safely manoeuvre your motor cruiser.

Training, knowledge and confidence can create capable and personable skippers. Learn to manoeuvre your motor cruiser, become more confident in high winds or strong tides, and a pleasure to be at sea with at all times.

A deposit is required per person with booking form to confirm your position (see booking form for terms and conditions on own vessel).
